Workshop on Building Large Forms with Onggi Technique

Thursdays, July 10 - July 31, 6–8:30pm
$375 – 10kg of clay, tools and bisque firing included.

Open only to past participants who have completed a 4–6 week session in either hand-building or wheel throwing.

This workshop introduces building larger forms using the Onggi technique—an ancient Korean method of coiling, paddling, and using an anvil to create voluminous jars, known as Onggi fermentation vessels.

Since learning the Onggi technique in Korea in 2018, I’ve been incorporating it into my sculptural practice. It’s become an integral part of how I work with form, gesture, and rhythm in creation. It’s a highly efficient way of working, allowing you to build quickly and intentionally. I’ve adapted the technique so that it can efficiently support both symmetrical vessels and more expressive, asymmetrical approaches that I use in my sculpture work.

The session will begin with a demonstration, followed by hands-on building time.

Hand-building experience required for those wanting to create free sculptural forms. Wheel experience is required for those wanting to create symmetrical forms. You can choose to work on an electric wheel or hand wheel, depending on your preference and the form you're creating.

Your work will be slowly dried and bisque fired after the workshop. You'll receive an email notification when pieces are ready for pickup—please allow 6–8 weeks for the firing process.

Cours sera donné en français et en anglais // Class will be held in french and english
