Hello from Japan + New Advanced Workshop

Dear friends,

Sending warm thoughts from Japan. I’m nearing the end of my residency here, and we’ve just finished loading the Anagama kiln — a moment of quiet anticipation. Wood firing is a kind of devotion, a physical prayer in shifts. For four days and four nights, we’ll stoke the fire with wood, building toward 2350°F. My work now rest among others, waiting for the flame to mark them.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working in a small countryside village in Fujioka. The slow rhythm of this life presented itself in different forms. A firing that spans nearly two weeks, countless walks to the very agricultural fields as a break from the studio, and fiddleheads — a gift from a neighbor, foraged from the mountain behind the village. This simplicity, this care, these old ways of being — they’ve seeped into my work. I look forward to bringing that back with me.

NEW ADVANCED WORKSHOP: TEXTURE + COLOR
I am preparing one-day workshop for the coming summer. I’ll be leading a focused two-hour intensive on Clay and Material Experimentation. In this hands-on session, we’ll explore material intervention — embedding organic matter, mineral powders, and oxides directly into clay bodies to create textures and color. We would like to hear your preference for the timing and format of the workshop. You can share them in this brief survey.

With Gratitude,

Mie
